In Kenya, more than 80% of adults don't have a formal credit history. Without one, it's nearly impossible to get a bank loan, qualify for a mortgage, or even get a phone contract on the best terms. But there's a hidden credit history that most Kenyans don't know about: your rent payment record.
The Hidden Credit Score Hiding in Your Rent
Every month you pay rent, you're making a financial decision that reflects your reliability as a borrower. The problem is that this information has historically been invisible to lenders. The landlord knows, but the bank doesn't. Until now.
kodiipay is building a Rent History feature that creates a verified, shareable record of your monthly rent payments. Each payment includes:
- Date and time of payment
- Amount paid
- M-Pesa transaction ID (verifiable with Safaricom)
- Property address and unit
- Landlord-verified status
- 12-month rolling payment history
How Lenders Will Use It
Partner banks and SACCOs will be able to access your Rent History (with your explicit consent) when evaluating loan applications. A tenant with 24 months of on-time rent payments and zero late fees becomes a much stronger credit candidate than someone with no history at all.
What This Means for You as a Tenant
If you have been diligently paying rent through kodiipay, you're already building credit without knowing it. When the Rent History feature launches, you'll be able to:
- Generate a verified rent history report to share with lenders
- Apply for a mortgage, car loan, or business loan with a stronger profile
- Negotiate better interest rates based on your payment reliability
- Build a formal credit history that follows you for life
What This Means for Landlords
Rent History also benefits landlords. Tenants who see a direct financial benefit to on-time payments are more motivated to pay. This creates a virtuous cycle: better payment behavior leads to stronger tenant credit, which leads to better loan terms, which leads to more financial stability, which leads to even better payment behavior.
The Bigger Picture
Financial inclusion is one of the most powerful forces for economic mobility in Kenya. By transforming rent payments — which already represent the single largest monthly expense for most urban Kenyans — into verifiable credit history, kodiipay is helping millions of hardworking tenants build the financial future they deserve.
